What is Palliative Care?

The MJHS Palliative Care program is offered in a variety of settings to ensure that patients have access to it when they need it. A person can receive our consultative services in their home, nursing home, assisted living facility or transfer to our highly respected MJHS Hospice Inpatient Unit at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan.

Palliative care stresses comfort, compassion and pain relief. But it can be provided in conjunction with curative and aggressive treatment during any stage of a person’s illness. Our Palliative Care Program will assist you until the unpleasant symptoms from your serious illness have resolved or act as a bridge to hospice care when curative treatment is no longer an option or choice.

Palliative care is a therapeutic approach appropriate for any patient with a serious or life-threatening illness. It is focused on reducing the burden of illness and the suffering of both the patient and family and improving quality of life while being in keeping with a patient’s beliefs and preferences.

Our Palliative Care Consultation Team provides comprehensive specialized Palliative Care assessments in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Nassau County. We act as your doctors’ “eyes and ears” and partner with your medical team to achieve the best outcome possible.
